Veterans' benefits _home_hprp_pennstation_releases_20150810222004_public_penn_station_folders_work_with_us_volunteer_lawyers_veterans_photo_jpg

Lawyers barred in Maryland or another U.S. jurisdiction represent Maryland veterans in their quest to get money and/or benefits they are due from their service and injuries during service.

Lawyers investigate veterans' disability issues and prepare claims to apply for VA compensation benefits or a military discharge upgrade. This is primarily a paper-based practice; hearings before the VA are rare. The legal work (research, document review, and writing) can usually be done at any time. Client meetings can be held at HPRP’s office in Baltimore City, via Skype, or at one our community-based partners’ locations.

HPRP mentors and supervises the work of our pro bono team. HPRP also provides malpractice insurance. To get started, either take the online training (offered by the Pro Bono Resource Center) or HPRP's in-person training.  For information on the next in-person training session, call 410-685-6589 x 14 or email hprpprobono@hprplaw.org.

Expungement

Lawyers barred in Maryland represent clients who want to expunge their criminal record. Once records are expunged, clients report a higher success rate in getting employment and housing.

Lawyers analyze the criminal record and prepare court petitions to file for the client. While expungement is a court-based process, a court hearing in most cases is unlikely (eligible petitions are granted upon review without a hearing). Pro bono attorneys meet clients at one of our community-based sites in Baltimore City or Montgomery County.

Homeless Youth Initiative

Lawyers barred in Maryland represent youth and young adults aged 24 and younger who lack stable housing and are on their own, without a parent or guardian. HPRP seeks volunteer attorneys with experience in one or more of the following areas: family law, consumer law, landlord-tenant law, child welfare law (connection and reconnection to foster care), name change, gender marker change, civil rights, and employment law. HPRP partners with Youth Empowered Society Drop-In Center to train volunteer attorneys to effectively build relationships with youth experiencing housing insecurity. Volunteers learn about cultural competency directly from youth trainers.

HPRP provides case support and malpractice insurance to our pro bono team. To get started, either take the online training (offered by the Pro Bono Resource Center) or HPRP's in-person training. For information, call 410-685-6589 x 11 or email ilofgren@hprplaw.org.
